Autism and Vaccination in Vancouver
Autism and Vaccination
At Vitalia Health Care, located in Vancouver, BC, parents and caregivers are given peace of mind by obtaining valuable knowledge related to autism and vaccinations. During a visit to our naturopathic clinic, parents will have the opportunity to discuss both the risks and benefits of various childhood vaccinations, such as MMR. This important visit will take place with our knowledgeable Naturopathic Physician who has completed specialized training in this unique area.
To ensure parents are able to make an informed decision on whether or not to have their children undergo critical childhood vaccine injections, parents are able to express their concerns and ask their questions to our Naturopathic Physician. Through a thorough discussion on the subject, parents are better able to make informed health decisions about vaccines and decide on alternative schedules for their child if desired.
So what exactly is it in some vaccines that make scientists worry about its safety? Some advocacy groups state that some common childhood vaccines contain ingredients such as Aluminum, Ethanol and Formaldehyde. This compound is believed to be toxic to the central nervous system and is thought to have raised the autism rates among children residing in the United States. However, some scientists continue to state that there is no credible scientific evidence that links autism to vaccines (Aluminum neurotoxicity: neurobehavioral and oxidative apects. Kumar V, et al. Arch Toxicol. 2009 Nov;83(11):965-78. Epub 2009 July 1 Review)
Thimerosal has been used for more than 70 years in vaccinations. The preservative is designed to inhibit the growth of fungi and bacteria in vaccines. Vaccinations are at risk for developing contaminations due to the way they are used by medical professionals. Many facilities have vaccines that are stored in large multi-dose vials for efficiency. Each time a vaccine is needed, a healthcare worker must puncture the rubber top with a new syringe, leaving the vaccine potentially exposed to contamination.
The primary argument made between the connection of thimerosal or Aluminum and autism is associated with the rate of diagnosis of autism that has been seen over the years. A diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder has been steadily rising since the early 1990s. During this time, the routine vaccination schedule was also rising, resulting in an increased total of thimerosal and preservative being injected into children. This correlation between the rising diagnoses of autism and rising use of preservative was blamed on thimerosal. Today, childhood vaccinations do not contain Thimerosol, but some do contain Aluminum.
The MMR vaccine continues to be a major concern for parents for several reasons. The MMR vaccine is generally first given to children between the ages of 12 and 15 months. In correlation, the first signs of autism in children are usually seen about 15 to 18 months. Due to the closeness in which autism symptoms begin so soon after the administration of the vaccine, it raises awareness about a possible link between the vaccination and development of autism. (Andrew Wakefield et al The Lancet Vol 351, Issue 9103 pg 637-641 February 28, 1998. Retracted in Lancet 2004, March 6).
Common childhood vaccination side effects and symptoms may express themselves immediately after a vaccination or several months after. Some side effects of certain vaccines include skin rashes, fever, convulsions, and possible behavior changes.
