Mercury and Vaccination in Vancouver
Mercury and Vaccination
Toxic mercury exposure can cause a multitude of adverse health effects, especially in developing children. Many parents are concerned that their children’s vaccinations contain a harmful dose of Aluminum and Mercury, causing much controversy in the medical industry. Many vaccinations contain Aluminum which acts as a preservative and inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi. The flu shot contains Mercury, in the form of Thimerosal. The compound thimerosal is actually 49.6 percent mercury by weight. Although mercury is not present in all vaccines, it still continues to be found in the flu vaccine.
In Canada, mercury has been removed from most scheduled childhood vaccinations. However, trace amounts can still be found in some flu vaccines. Between 80 and 90 percent of flu shots in any given year contain thimerosal, and most consumers are unaware of this fact. At Vitalia Health Care, based in Vancouver, BC, we offer services to educate and inform parents about childhood vaccinations and how they can affect their children’s health. Parents will have the opportunity to state their concerns with our experienced and highly-knowledgeable Naturopathic Physician and have their questions answered.
Thimerosal has several important uses that make it a paramount ingredient in some vaccines. Its primary function is to kill the bacteria that make the vaccine itself, as well as to kill any bacteria that may enter the vaccine during the production process. Thimerosal also acts as a powerful preservative used to prevent fungal and bacteria contamination during clinical use. This preservative is generally added to the vaccine at the end of the production process.
Mercury can have numerous adverse health effects, especially in infants and young children who are still highly vulnerable to disease. Mercury is considered a highly toxic compound that can be harmful to the developing brain during pregnancy, infancy, and throughout childhood. During the first several years of life, a child’s brain is rapidly developing and absorbing vital nutrients. Even in small doses, mercury can effect a child’s developing, can delay talking and walking, can shorten a child’s attention span, and can cause numerous learning disabilities.
Currently, all pediatric vaccines included in the standard infant immunization schedule are manufactured without the use of thimerosal as a preservative. Most vaccines containing thimerosal as a preservative have expired as of January 14, 2003. However, other vaccines continue to be manufactured with thimerosal as a preservative..
In addition to the neurotoxic effects of vaccines containing mercury, a possible link has been hypothesized between mercury and the development of autism in children. (Mercury and autism: accelerating evidence? Neuro Endocinol Lett 2005 Oct 26(5) 439-46. Mutter J, Naumann J et al)Mercury has been found to affect microtubules, which aid in neuronal function and in synaptogenesis. Studies have shown that the timing between thimerosal injections in infants and toddlers corresponds with the major neuronal development and synaptogenesis that occurs in humans. Synaptogenesis is vital in regard to smiling, eye-contact, early language, and other traits that help in the diagnosis of autism.
The majority of vaccinations are given early in life, which is when most developmental problems surface in children. Autistic Spectrum Disorder, which includes both Pervasive Developmental Disorder and Autism, are common developmental disorders that also present during toddlerhood and do not have a proven cause. Vaccine manufacturers that use thimerosal as a preservative generally add between 12.5 and 25 micrograms of mercury per dose of vaccine. While this dose is not generally harmful, children who are exposed to a sufficient quantity are at a higher risk for disease and death.
